Thank you to all who helped make Cycle for Shelter 2014 a huge success!
More than 200 cyclists registered for the 26th annual event. Despite the rain, our cyclists said they had a wonderful time and expressed their thanks to the Emmaus staff and volunteers for helping to make this such a special day.
"Cycle for Shelter was excellent this year," said Ted Olsson who rode the 100-mile route. "The route was well-marked and all the stops on the Century ride were super and the volunteers were very supportive."
Olsson added that the volunteers at the Georgetown rest stop offered him plastic sandwich bags to protect his cell phone and bike computer from the rain.
"The extra care to include a box of zip bags was very thoughtful and appreciated, as I was pretty much water-logged for the rest of the ride," he said.
Hillary Benson, a member of the North Shore Cyclists' team, described the day as "motivating."
"I saw so many old friends, new friends...I've been feeling so happy...We will have more people [on our team] and raise more money next year," Benson said.
We are proud to announce that we surpassed our goal of $125,000! We are so grateful to all our cyclists, sponsors and volunteers for making this event such a success. Please keep checking our Facebook page for more photos of this year's event.
It is imporant to note that we are stil accepting online donations for cycle for shelter until Monday, August 31, 2014.
Emmaus needs your financial support to insure that we'll be able to provide what homeless children and adults need to rebuild their lives - emergency shelter, housing research assistance, affordable housing, adult education and job training and support services. This year more than 3,500 homeless adults and children will seek help from Emmaus as they face homelessness, a crisis that most of us can only imagine in our worst nightmares.
Here's the good news. Armed with sufficient resources, Emmaus can get the job done. In the past year alone, we have moved 200 homeless families and 80 individuals into permanent housing.
Your support helps Emmaus "empower families and individuals reach their fullest potential."
